On LP5, Autechre make rhythm feel unstable without abandoning it. Patterns fracture, forms buckle and melodies appear just long enough to establish a floor before the floor moves again. The machinery sounds precise; the experience of following it does not. It is a transition and not a destination, which is where several of their best ideas turned out to live.
