LP5 is the last Autechre record you could still tap along to, the point just before the algorithms took over and melody and pulse started dissolving for good. It's the group balanced on the edge between the accessible early work and the abstraction to come, and that balance makes it one of their most rewarding records. It ranks at eighty-six because it's a transitional statement rather than a definitive one, but the transition is where a lot of their best ideas live.
