Why it's here

Self-portrait sleeve, orchestral menace; the transitional one that holds up best

...I Care Because You Do is the transitional Aphex record that holds up best, orchestral menace and a self-portrait sleeve, the sound of him moving from the ambient works toward the drill'n'bass to come. It's less immediately loved than the records on either side of it, but it's more coherent than its in-between status suggests. It ranks at eighty-seven because it's a bridge rather than a destination, but it's a bridge worth crossing, and the menace on it is real.
