Spanners is the last Black Dog record before Plaid left, and it's the sound of a group arguing beautifully right up to the split. It's their most ritualistic and most restless work, three minds pulling in different directions and producing something richer for the friction. It ranks at sixty-five because that tension makes it demanding rather than easy, but the demand is the reward, and nothing they made separately quite matched this.
