Ken Downie, Ed Handley and Andy Turner wrote IDM's founding texts from Sheffield before Handley and Turner left to become Plaid. Downie kept the project running with Martin and Richard Dust and pointed it at the surveillance state. Five albums chart across both lists. Bytes made machine music mystical and the project never fully abandoned that.
