Karl O'Connor's founding statement; techno as post-punk

A first statement still sharpening its edges, and those edges defined a scene. Karl O'Connor finds Birmingham techno's post-punk edge on Gymnastics, and the tracks are stark and rough enough that repetition feels abrasive rather than hypnotic. Downwards' later severity is already present, before it acquired a uniform.

12 on The 10 Best Techno Albums

Downwards at its least welcoming. British industrial minimalism starts here and has never got friendlier.

13 on The 10 Best Industrial and EBM Albums

Downwards making Birmingham a byword for punishing techno. The bridge between this list and the techno one.
