Karl O'Connor made Birmingham a byword for punishing techno through Downwards and gave British industrial music a second life. He worked with Surgeon and Female and later formed Sandwell District, and has always treated the music as closer to post-punk than to house. Gymnastics remains genuinely unfriendly, thirty years on.
