Longing and paranoia keep destabilizing the breaks on Black Secret Technology. Gerald's deliberately rough mix smears the music at the edges and holds the atmosphere unsettled, and he widened the genre's emotional range in a way Photek and Source Direct clearly heard. He later remixed the album himself, but the murk of the original is part of what makes it feel alive. It is also what holds it here: a cleaner record would have traveled further and meant less.

Breaks treated as living tissue rather than loops, recorded and mixed so murkily that the original pressing is part of the legend. Gerald had already made Voodoo Ray and left 808 State, then built jungle's deep end more or less alone.
