Automanikk is Voodoo Ray's creator on a major label, A Guy Called Gerald caught in the awkward window before jungle rescued him. It's a record of an artist between phases, the Manchester acid genius trying to fit a bigger machine, and it's more interesting than that transitional status suggests. It ranks at a hundred and sixty-six because it's not quite the equal of his best work on either side of it, but Gerald's instincts are audible throughout, and the record has aged better than its moment.
