BCD compressed dub techno onto a single CD and every record in the genre since is a footnote to it. Basic Channel took the loops of Berlin and the weight of dub reggae and found something that barely changes across its length yet never stops moving. It is loops, gloriously, and that's both the achievement and the ceiling. Chain Reaction, Echospace and a decade of Berlin minimalism are downstream of this one disc.

The origin. Von Oswald and Ernestus turning a mixing desk into an instrument and inventing a genre without appearing to try. Thirty years of imitation and almost none of it comes close.

Chords buried so deep in reverb they arrive as pressure rather than notes. It collects the twelve-inches instead of being written as an album, which is a real objection, but nothing else in this canon has been copied so often by so many people getting it so wrong.
