№ 114 on The 250 Best Electronic Albums of the 20th Century
Domestic objects as percussion; house music with a manifesto attached
On Around the House, crockery and domestic noise become percussion, and the album never becomes a demonstration. Herbert's trick is that the source material disappears inside the groove; you notice the idea after the track already works. The concept shows its workings now and then. Matmos and a whole clicks-and-cuts scene followed from it.
№ 6 on The 10 Best Deep House Albums
Microhouse with a beating heart and a manifesto behind it. Kitchen sounds and domestic noise under Dani Siciliano's voice, and far warmer than a concept record has any right to be.
№ 6 on The 10 Best House Albums
Microhouse with a pulse and a manifesto behind it. Matthew Herbert built tracks out of kitchen sounds and domestic noise, then hung Dani Siciliano's voice over them, and the result is far warmer than the concept has any business being.
