Newbuild is raw, wrong, and the most authentically Manchester acid record, 808 State before the polish, with no singles on it at all. It's the sound of a group discovering the machines with no interest in making them behave, and Aphex reissued it on Rephlex for a reason. It ranks at a hundred and thirty-five because its rawness is deliberately unfriendly, but that rawness is exactly what makes it a document, and it's the truest record of that scene's beginnings.
