Alex Paterson came from roadie work with Killing Joke, ran the chill-out room at Land of Oz with Jimmy Cauty, and built tracks from samples, weather and long silences. Four albums chart, from Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld through Moonbuilding. Ambient house became a genre and a running joke, and both have outlived everyone who told it.
