Invented the chill-out room's soundtrack by inventing an imaginary road trip

Chill Out is a conceptual masterpiece, an imaginary night drive across the American South rendered entirely in samples, pedal steel and radio ghosts, and it effectively invented the chill-out album as a form. Orbus Terrarum, the Selected Ambient Works and the whole ambient-techno double-LP tradition follow from it. Its rank is an honest blend of the record and the room it built. Track for track it's less dense than the eight above it, but few records here have mattered more.
