Why it's here

Broadcast live down phone lines to radio stations; the format was the art

ISDN was broadcast live down phone lines to radio stations, and the format was the art as much as the music. FSOL turned a technical constraint into a whole aesthetic, improvising ambient in real time and beaming it out before anyone thought of the studio as a broadcast tool. It's a document of genuine invention. It ranks at forty-nine because as a listening record it's looser than their composed work, but as an idea it was years ahead.
