Not for Threes is post-Black Dog Plaid smuggling melody back into Warp, the two remaining members finding a warmth and a tunefulness the trio's work had kept in check. It's the sound of a group freed to be gentle, and the gentleness is a genuine strength rather than a softening. It ranks at ninety-two because it's less ambitious than the Black Dog records that preceded it, but it's more humane, and it pointed toward the melodic IDM they'd perfect.
