Da Funk and Rollin' & Scratchin': filter house as garage rock
Homework is French house arriving fully formed, filter disco built with the energy of garage rock. 'Da Funk' and 'Around the World' and 'Rollin' & Scratchin'' are permanent, and the record founded a whole national sound almost single-handedly. It sits just below the Richard D. James Album because invention edges out function at the same level of quality, but as a debut statement it has few equals here. Everything French touch became starts on this record.
№ 2 on The 10 Best French House Albums
Two Parisians in a bedroom inventing a national style by accident. Rawer than the reputation and weirder than the singles let on. Da Funk is the calling card and Rollin' & Scratchin' is the reason other producers took it seriously.
