Debut is a club record with a singer: Nellee Hooper producing, and Björk bringing songs strong enough to survive the collision. The club tracks feel immediate; the cabaret turns feel stranger beside them. That unevenness is audible, but so is the excitement of hearing pop and nightlife learn each other's language. The method was real even where the album wanders.
