Xen renders its title character's body-horror directly in sound: rhythm that lurches and buckles rather than locks into a grid, synthesis with a viscous, organic texture unlike anything else in club music at the time. As a self-portrait built entirely from instrumental means, it gave the 2010s deconstructed-club movement its most influential solo blueprint.
