World Receiver is ambient built from shortwave radio, the most alien record on this list, Tetsu Inoue constructing something genuinely otherworldly from the static between stations. It's a record that turns the sound of distance itself into music, cold and strange and utterly distinctive, and it's one of the most conceptually daring ambient statements of the decade. It ranks at a hundred and eighty-six because its strangeness limits its reach, but the strangeness is unlike anything else, and it's a small masterpiece of texture.
