Darker and drier than Dummy; they sampled their own fake records
Portishead make their second album darker by removing some of Dummy's seduction. They sample records they created themselves, leaving the tracks dry, tense and oddly airless, with Beth Gibbons' voice exposed against more negative space. The refusal to repeat the debut is audible in every stripped surface. Less seductive than Dummy; probably the braver record.
№ 5 on The 10 Best Trip-Hop Albums
Darker, drier and less loved than the debut, mostly because it refuses to repeat it. The Rhodes and theremin give way to something more claustrophobic, and the band never sounded more like a band.
