They pressed their own vinyl in order to sample it, which tells you how much of Dummy is construction rather than mood. Beth Gibbons, Geoff Barrow and Adrian Utley made heartbreak sound like surveillance footage, defined trip-hop, and then spent two albums refusing to repeat any of it. Dummy defined the genre and everything after it proves the definition was never a formula.
