The Pearl

Harold Budd's piano keeps slipping out of focus inside Brian Eno's treatments, notes blooming and disappearing before they can harden into melody. The Pearl turns that softness into structure: intimate enough to feel close, spacious enough to seem endless. The treated-piano language it perfected went on to echo through a generation of neo-classical records, but the original still feels almost weightless. Ancestry decides the altitude. On beauty alone, almost nothing above it competes.

Budd plays, Eno treats, neither wins. Soft-focus on the surface and rigorously built underneath.
