Frankie Knuckles waited until after helping invent house's language to make his one real album, and Beyond the Mix sounds like someone with nothing left to prove. The production is warm and controlled, the songs given room to breathe, and 'Your Love' carries the history and stops short of a monument. The innovation had already happened on the singles; this is the craft that followed. Knuckles moves the album like music, not evidence.
