A precondition for this list more than a member of it, and the influence downstream is direct. The Crackdown catches Cabaret Voltaire wiring tape-loop paranoia into a sequencer. The groove tightens, but the old industrial unease keeps leaking through it; this is dance music that never quite trusts the room it is moving.

Sheffield discovering the sequencer. Kirk and Mallinder took tape loops, shortwave and paranoia and wired them into something you could move to, and the line from this to the city's bleep techno barely bends.
