Juan Mendez came to Los Angeles from Guatemala as a child and treated cold wave and industrial as equal ancestors to Detroit, working as a designer as well as a producer and giving Sandwell District its visual language. Negative Fascination is techno's post-punk shadow. His death in 2024 left a real gap in a scene he had helped define.
