777 is Steve Hillage's second life, Gong meeting Detroit and somehow working, System 7 fusing festival psychedelia with dance music in a way that shouldn't cohere and does. It's a record built on an unlikely marriage of traditions, prog and rave and ambient all folded together, and Hillage's melodic instincts hold it together. It ranks at a hundred and ninety because that fusion is occasionally awkward, but the ambition is genuine, and the best of it is genuinely transporting.
