Sampled big band cut into D&B; Ninja Tune's most technically astonishing hour
Big-band fragments get cut into drum & bass until the source material stops behaving like jazz. Amon Tobin's edits are ferocious, but the technique generates momentum instead of sitting on display. The machinery dazzles; the movement keeps it alive.
№ 5 on The 10 Best Downtempo Albums
The sampler treated as an orchestra pit rather than a crate. Tobin chopped jazz sides into music with no obvious parents, and the drum programming here is more inventive than anything else the label released that decade.
