Neil Tennant was a Smash Hits journalist and Chris Lowe was studying architecture, which is audible in everything they made: the wit is reported and the structures are drawn. Actually is where the jokes turn out to be arguments about class, money and desire, delivered over some of the most expensive-sounding pop of the decade. They have never had to reinvent themselves because they were never in fashion.
