No guitars, a Polymoog, and a persona built out of alienation and cheekbones. The Pleasure Principle got a vicious press and turned out to be right about almost everything: the sound, the imagery, and the idea that a pop star could be uncomfortable to look at. Cars is the hit and the album is colder and more coherent than that suggests.
