Philippe Zdar and Boombass had been producing rap in Paris for years before they made house records, which is why their filtering swings instead of merely repeating. 1999 is French touch at its most assured. Zdar went on to produce Phoenix and Cat Power before his death in 2019, and the loss registered well outside dance music.
