Manchester dub techno slowed to a crawl and packed in tape mud, which sounds like an insult and is not. The turn came when Stott asked his old piano teacher, Alison Skidmore, to sing over the murk. Luxury Problems was the result, and a decade of producers have been chasing that particular balance of weight and voice ever since. Three albums here, and Modern Love has never released a bad one.
