Alien is Mr Fingers' ambient science fiction, house music's best melodist at his strangest, deep house dissolving into something cosmic and unsettled. Larry Heard took his gift for melody somewhere colder and more exploratory here, and the result is one of his most intriguing and least expected records. It ranks at a hundred and forty-six because it's a departure that trades warmth for atmosphere, but the atmosphere is genuinely alien, and few house producers ever reached this far out.
